Slowly, the Whole Unfolds
Curators: Arie Berkowitz, Vera Pilpoul
the work will be on disply from 19 Dec 2024 for a year.
“Slowly, the Whole Unfolds” is a wall installation stretching ten meters along the eastern external wall of the Artists’ House in Tel Aviv.
The installation consists of multilayered, collage-like structures and assemblages made of monochromatic wooden scraps, intersecting and overlapping in ways that challenge order.
The abstract formations sometimes evoke architectural remnants or nascent landscapes, offering a dialogue between construction and disintegration. The work seeks to convey the gradual discovery of patterns and relationships within the seemingly chaotic design, inviting contemplation of the tension between disorder and harmony, and unveiling an evolving narrative that resists immediate comprehension.
Bornstein-Wolff’s work in recent decades is rooted in reuse as a way of life. Under her hands, wooden scraps are transformed into a fragmented geometric fabric, reflecting elements of place and time. Architectural motifs within the piece recall local Middle Eastern architecture, as well as the modernist grid of urban towers, and cubist elements reminiscent of the International Style, of which Tel Aviv holds many treasures.
For the artist, this wall relief is currently an unfinished work in progress. True to her methods, she aims to make the whole even more complete, where every wooden scrap finds its natural presence within the complex sculptural and labyrinthine composition.
